When seen from the perspective of Costa I Llobera as a public center of La Generalitat, the history, personality and projects of our school create a very characteristic feeling.

Under the surface, the form and texture that make up this picture are clearly conveyed.

Costa i Llobera as a school was first born in 1958, through the initiative and drive of Dr. Jaume Bofill backed by a group of young teachers and  scholars from the post-war generation, and had the clear and precise intention of integrating a new pedagogy in resemblance to the one before the dictatorship.

There was no romanticism in their actions, but rather faith in the future and a solid will to educate free people, capable of rational and critical thinking, politically committed and with a wide horizon of values.  Social solidarity, democratic freedom and, with the atmosphere which gives these values their meaning, the sentiment of Catalan identity, always open to other groups, whilst at the same time refusing to remain stuck in the past.

In the 60s the school grew, despite the many bureaucratic setbacks.

It grew firstly in its pedagogic task, not only through dialogue given and offered inside of the educative community, but also in vital aspects of the psychopedagogic care of the children and the creation of educational resources: collections of mural images, a school library, and information gathering regarding outings, trips and camps that allow us to experience our country in an enriching way.

These are the core elements, that whilst adapt and transform throughout time, will never cease to be present in our pedagogy.

Costa i Llobera also took action outwards, actively participating in the pedagogic renovation that was going on at the time. Things like the Rosa Sensat Teacher's Association, and later, the School Coordination Committee are products of this joint effort with other institutions at the time.

In the 70s we saw the elements brought in by the new law: firstly the EGB (Basic General Education in Catalan), and later on the BUP (former Secondary School degree) . This task was followed through during the 80s and strongly impacted the teachers that lived through it. Nowadays we only remember the «Development of the pleasure for reading», «The influence of the techniques in the learning process of students from 12 to 16 years» and the experimental «Cicle Superior».

Getting the Generalitat back meant for us, and for many other schools in Catalunya, the chance to take forward our concept of a school as a public service open to everybody.  This was something that could not be achieved with the Franco state school model, which was strongly idealized and centralized, as it did not allow to do so without entering in conflict with the rest of the principles that guided the practice of our educative communities.

The political desire of all these centres comes to life through the CEPEPC constitution as a representative organization with the power to negotiate and make decisions. On the other hand, the creation of the «Secretariat de la Campanya en defensa de l’Ensenyament Públic i la seva qualitat» (Secretary to the Campaign in defense of Public Education and its quality), along with other organizations, shows in a patient manner, the opening of CEPEPC schools to the wider horizon of all the Generalitat schools.

«Costa i Llobera is structured around a project that's defined explicitly, whilst at the same time being shared implicitly. Its method articulates many diverse personalities and brings together different tendencies, leading to results formed by traditional and consolidated positions, and innovative elements that often help construct this project»

Our pedagogic purpose is to share a project that gives the school a solid foundation that allows it to face any educational challenges and to integrate new teachers that join the center.

One of this project's qualities is the character of its management (the school ranges from ages 3-18), which has allowed us to continue the school's tradition and to add to the rest of the educative community, providing a unique experience of direct relation between all the different education stages, inside of the state school context.

Another essential trait of our school is the persistence and will of our strategic planning. In this manner in the later years the school has been involved in strategic programmes like: “Integrated gestion 3-18” (2000-2004), “Educative coherence in a global context” (2004-2006), and “Pla de plans” (2006-2011) a strategic plan to increase our school's autonomy, which collects all the innovative and experimental programmes that our center proposes. We have also worked on courses and projects: foreign languages, environmental issues, PELEs, library, TICs, audiovisuals, orientation and cooperative work, among others, with the intention to innovate and reflect on our educational methods.

Costa i Llobera has been one center for more than ten years since the new Catalonia Education Law (LEC) was passed (it used to have two center codes). It might not be exactly what we imagined, but we are committed to continue working with our renovative spirit, without asking for any privileges, but working for the improvement of public education and our unique 3-18 project.
